Hello all.

Chicago-based band Varsity just released their single “The Dogs Only Listen To Him.” Girl K has been raving about this band and their newest music—even adding that it’s music for the whole family!—via her Twitter account, so it’s only right that I took a listen myself. I will always trust Girl K’s judgement. (And go read my post about Girl K’s newest single here, if you haven’t already!)

The single was released on Oct. 31, and it is like candy. It starts off with the sweetest, bubbly beat, and I can’t help but be reminded of the same in the iconic “Monster Mash” song. “The Dogs Only Listen To Him” is smooth and captivating in the lo-fi, surf-pop sounds it presents listeners. Something like a dream, I want to know who thought they could be good enough for lead vocalist Stephanie Smith; such a precious being deserves only the best, most quality attention. (There’s a cute interview she did that you can listen to here!)

Smith sings with perhaps more than a hint of melancholy, “Take me out/Follow me home/Give me a/Thought of my own.” I can just feel the disrespect through her words. The world is cruel.

The bright rhythm and soft undertones mixed with Smith’s angelic vocals present something kind on the surface, but when listening to the lyrics, I understand fully this is a song of disappointment. This is a song that claims pain has been inflicted and perhaps people are just boring and narrow-minded.

I like the way this song makes me feel—especially at first. I am even reminded of Girl K in some really raw and objective way—they both make me feel good. Varsity’s single is claiming its place in the music world as beautiful and delicate and hopeful that every person isn’t out to strip our lives of peace of mind or some hope in humankind. Smith and the band have delivered “The Dogs Only Listen To Him” in order to take back that power and stand up and fight back in the name of real love.

Smith says, “The dogs only listen to him/And I’m not about to do him.” Amazing. Powerful woman? Powerful women. I love her. We all should. If she can do better, so can we.
