Faux Furrs' 'Bag Baby' suggests forgiveness despite differences

Faux Furrs' "Bag Baby" music video was released on Oct. 13, 2018. The description for the video claims "in the world of the undead, two mythic rival gangs of werewolves and vampires discover what it means to forgive and forget."

Faux Furrs describes their music as something like a mix of neo-psychedelia, dream pop, folk rock and garage rock. Their latest EP "Canopy" is currently streaming on all platforms, and they have a show coming up on Nov. 4 at The Owl, 2521 N. Milwaukee Ave. I've never seen them live, but maybe I will be able to catch them this time around!

The music video for “Bag Baby” follows two very different groups—the "Batty Boys" and the "Demon Doggz." After a series of events and mostly misunderstandings, they eventually meet in a bar and have a few drinks, play some music and become good pals. The video highlights what it means to really forgive and forget; to get along with and be kind to everyone, no matter who they might be.

This Chicago-based artist has offered such an important idea in this music video, especially considering the world we live in today. As a whole, it suggests the very thing that is happening around us every day—this racism, hatred or even just distaste for people who are "different," this idea that one group of people is somehow better than or deserving of more than another group. "Bag Baby" presents a reality that, despite differences and disagreements, all people (or werewolves and vampires) have the ability to come together, be kind and forgive, if necessary. We all have this option in life to be good, rather than disapprove or push aside someone for being anything that we are not.

The music video also suggests that often when we look or act differently than someone else, we judge them for those differences—we misjudge people all the time. In the video, the werewolves seem to be misjudged by the vampires as being angry and vengeful, but in reality, they just wanted to return the skateboard to one of the "Batty Boys." The "Demon Doggz” could have stirred up more trouble, but instead, they did something kind and unexpected—they forgave.

We need more of that in our world and in our city; we need more forgiveness. That's a huge message that came across in this video that I think everyone—maybe especially those in the local scene—needs to be reminded of and needs to practice themselves. Love, rather than hate. Love and forgiveness are two words we use lightly, but if placed at the center of everything we do, can change the world in so many ways. I liked that about this video.

I hope we can all someday really love and embrace everyone, despite differences, as we love ourselves. Chicago needs that. The local music scene needs that, as well, especially if we want it to continue to be a safe space. Love and forgive.
